SAM Trade Show

From 25 to 27 April 2012, the World Conference on Sustainable Development in Mountainous Regions will open its doors in the heart of Grenoble, capital city of the French Alps.

The three days of the SAM Show will bring together actors in the mountain economy from around the world. Over 500 exhibitors, representing 15 business sectors (snow generation, safety, piste grooming, ski lifts, sports and leisure, infrastructure and equipment, etc.) will receive 15000 professional visitors from 44 different countries.

40000 m2 of exhibition space, unique in the world, will allow attendees to explore living, innovative mountain areas which respect the environment and are in the vanguard of sustainable development. Visitors from Russia, the United States, the Andes, China, Scandinavia, Canada and Korea will visit SAM, a veritable worldwide marketplace for snow and mountains. More than 15% of our visitors are from outside France. Manufacturers involved in the winter sports industry are now adapting for urban environments the advanced technologies developed and proven over many years in mountainous regions. The world leaders in cable-driven transport will be present (Leitner, Doppelmayr and Poma, French champion among exporters and  highly regarded for its achievements in New York, Colombia, Brazil and Korea, to name but a few).

HIGHLIGHTS OF SAM 2012

Spotlight on Innovation and the Environment

In association with Club Alpin Français, SAM will present the new Refuge du Goûter. Perched at an altitude of 3835 metres on a route to the summit of Mont Blanc, the new Refuge du Goûter is an ecological and technological building with a maximum degree of self-sufficiency.  It is one of a new generation of buildings which incorporates the latest energy technologies (photovoltaic and thermal solar collectors, snowmelter, waste water treatment, etc.) and meets the highest standards of environmental quality and energy self-sufficiency. Its astonishing, egg-like architecture is designed, in aesthetic and technical terms, to integrate into all the climatic constraints of an environment with an average wind speed approaching 240 km/h. The refuge is unique in the world and will open its doors in July. Others buildings are under construction.

Mountains are for everyone

Mountain regions are diversifying; SAM is at the centre of this evolutionary process and has taken up the challenge of the four-seasons mountain which is concerned about well-being and new sporting activities (sliding sports, mountain biking, etc.), new leisure activities (tree climbing, Tyrolean traverses, via ferrata, spas and hot springs), heritage and gastronomy. Of the 61000 outdoor sports instructors in France, more than 34000 work in the mountains (information from the Ministry of Sports).

The Interpraevent Conference

Following Taiwan, the 12th International INTERPRAEVENT Conference will be held in France for the first time.

SAM and IRSTEA Grenoble (National Institute for Research in Science and Technology for the Environment and Agriculture, previously known as Cemagref) are hosting this Conference on the theme of “protecting the environment against natural hazards (floods, lava flows, avalanches, landslides, falling rock masses, etc.). Some 450 scientists from around the world will share their experience and expertise, joining forces with mountain professionals.

Seminars and conferences

- 26 April: seminar entitled “Reviving the induction class: a route for attracting young people to the mountains” (organised by ANEM and ANMSM) and official visit to SAM accompanied by a member of the European Parliament
